AN ambitious project has been launched in Raglan to seek all those from the town who served and died in the First World War.

The project, headed by Raglan VC Primary School head teacher Jeremy Piper, and local historian Brinley Morgan, (both pictured) aims to create a new memorial plaque, as there is currently no formal recognition for the fallen in the village.

The idea for the project has come in part from the children of the school, who have been learning through Mr Morgan of the men listed on the current memorial.

"The children wanted to know more about the names on the memorial," said Mr Piper.

"With us moving soon to a new school building, years and years of history will be moved to a new location and we want to make sure nothing is lost from the site before we go. We want to protect what makes this school, this school.

"If anyone knows of anyone from Raglan who served or fell in the First World War, we would be really grateful if you could get in touch.

"We are also very interested in anyone who may have come here as an evacuee, or worked in the school at the time of the war.

"We want to get a better understanding of who these people were. There will be some happy memories and of course some sad, but we have to conserve what happened."

It is thought that there is currently no First World War memorial because the fear was too great that someone would be missed off the list.

The school wishes to put the list of names together through research and readers' help, and it give the plaque as a gift to the village.

Brinley Morgan will in coming weeks be publishing two new historical books about Raglan in the Second World War, entitled The Raglan Fallen, and Raglan at War. Through this research he has begun unravelling the first few stories that link Raglan with the world war.

Mr Piper is also seeking anyone with any information about a time capsule buried under the school. The exact location is not known and the fear is that the relic will be lost if the school is rebuilt. Please get in touch with the Beacon or the school with any information.
