A FUND set up to help Ruby Atkins walk unaided has received a boost of more than £2,000 after an event held in Caldicot Castle over the bank holiday (Saturday 24th to Monday 26th May). Family and friends of the three-year-old set up camp at the Welsh Perry and Cider Festival, where they sold cakes donated and baked by both Waitrose and Tesco. A raffle was also held at the event with a stay at the Celtic Manor up for grabs. Children who visited the fundraisers were transformed into animals by staff at Ruby's nursery, Little Tigers, who were on hand to offer face painting. Princess Belle also made an appearance to meet with Ruby and all the children. The money raised at the event has boosted Ruby's fund to more than £25,500, meaning she has reached 64 per cent of her £40,000 fundraising target. Ruby was born prematurely at 30 weeks and diagnosed with bilateral cerebral palsy meaning her ability to walk unaided is restricted. The tot is in need of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) treatment which would reduce the spasticity in her legs and enable her to walk unaided. Ruby's family and friends have been fundraising tirelessly to raise money for the operation currently not funded on the NHS. Ruby's dad, Antony Atkins, said: "We had a fabulous weekend, with so much support from family, friends." The next event for Ruby is next Tuesday (3rd June) when her mum, Rachael Atkins, will rally her work colleagues at the Ministry of Justice, Newport, together for their second 'dress down day' to raise money, the team is also available to wash cars. On 22nd June fundraisers will be at Redwick Village Hall for afternoon tea, a raffle and 'selfie' opportunities with Princess Belle.
