NINETEEN properties in Monmouth will be opening their doors for free this weekend for the European Heritage Open Doors event.

Leaflets detailing the properties and giving short summaries of their attractions are now available at the Shire Hall and a number of shops and pubs in the town.

The event on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September is organised by Monmouth Civic Society in association with Cadw, the Welsh historic monuments body. It aims to promote appreciation of the history and architectural richness of Monmouth’s finest buildings.

Visitors will have a chance to see inside some places which are not normally open to the public. Guides will be on hand at most of the properties.

For the first time, the fascinating and historic Malthouse in St Mary Street, which is undergoing restoration, will be taking part in Open Doors.

There will be special events at the Round House, the National Trust property on the Kymin. On Saturday there is rock painting when visitors can learn to decorate pebbles, and instruction in spinning and weaving. On Sunday, in addition to rock painting, there will be water colour painting and homemade cakes.

Most of the Open Doors properties will be open from 2pm to 5pm. Full details are on the leaflet.
