SIR,
My wife and I have just returned from a glorious
holiday in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps, during
which time my mind was drawn to Monmouth and its
tourism possibilities and how tourism in Monmouth
could be enhanced.
Our holiday took in a trip to Kitzbuhl in Austria and a
journey to the top of Kitzbuhl Mountain to visit the
restaurant and admire the fine views.
Whilst sitting on the terrace area of the restaurant, it
was possible to see great similarities between Kitzbuhl
Mountain and the Kymin.
Both overlook a town and both offer the most glorious
views across wide open countryside. One can take a
cable car to the top of Kitzbuhl Mountain and once
the, fine food, drinks, clean toilets and a shop are
available to visitors and numerous people make the
journey to the top of the mountain and in doing so
bring much needed money into the local economy.
The Kymin, by contrast, has little to offer in
comparison.
Surely the time has come to consider promoting The
Kymin in a similar manner, either by private enterprise
or by lottery funding. The gradient of slope and
geographical location of The Kymin would make it
ideal for a small cable car to take visitors to the top
and once there they could take in the views from a
newly built restaurant and visitor centre at the top
Money would be spent on the cable car trip, in the
restaurant and also a small gift shop, bringing much
needed wealth into the area.
Surely such a venture would draw the public to the
area from far and wide and turn our much loved
Monmouth into the Kitzbuhl of Wales!
I for one would be the first in the queue to take my
wife up The Kymin in style should such a venture ever
see the light of day and I am sure many others would
follow.
