Rail delays, cancellations and overcrowding at Severn Tunnel Junction are to be discussed at a public meeting next week. Rail passenger lobby group STAG (the Severn Tunnel Action Group) have called the meeting, which will take place in the Community Suite at Rogiet Junior School at 7pm next Tuesday (20th May). Spokesman David Flint said rail timetable cuts a few years ago led to passenger demonstrations, anger and the forming of STAG. "We understand that passengers are again being let down and we intend to fight for their right to a decent rail service, if that's what they want," he said. According to the Office of Rail Regulations' annual stations usage report, Severn Tunnel station has seen a 72 per cent increase in use in seven years (2005-06 to 2012-13) – almost 190,000 more rail passenger journeys each year. STAG has invited representatives of First Great Western, Monmouthshire County Council and other interested parties to the meeting. In the coming months, further disruption is expected as the footbridge and the ticket office are both due to be replaced. Within a year or two the road bridge is also due for replacement as main line electrification work takes place.
