THE proposed local government review of community and electoral arrangements, postponed until 2022 is now back on the table.

In 2015, the feared reorganisation of community councils was called off when John Pearson, local democracy manager for Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) thanked councils for responding to the consultation and said: “Work completed so far, including the valuable input during the consultation stages, will not be wasted as these can be fed in to the review for completion in 2022 and highlights a number of errors with the current arrangements that will need to be addressed at that time.”

However a new document seen by the Beacon has informed community councils that MCC has been requested by the Welsh Government and the Local Boundary Commission to “pick up from where the review was postponed” and submit final proposals to them by April 2018 for a decision by the Welsh Government.

The document said that proposals for this review will take effect at the next ordinary council elections, (either 2021 or 2022) and said that the council will be reconvening its working group with representatives from each political party and finalising proposals based on the feedback received at the previous consultation.

Members of Llangattock-vibon-avel Community Council were a little wary of the document as the summary of concerns seemed to differ from their recollection of involvement in the consultation which took place at County Hall in 2014 and would be writing to the council to voice their concerns.
