A coach carrying Monmouth Comprehensive school children was stopped by police on the A466, outside LIDL, on Friday 18th July while transporting children to school. The children were removed from the coach and made their own way to school or were driven by parents. The police had been tipped off by Gloucestershire County Council after they had previously inspected the two coaches owned by Keith and Dorothy Bevan of Travelrite Coaches, Coleford and found them to be unfit for use. Alan Bently, Integrated Transport Manager of Gloucestershire County Council said: "The company operates two coaches to and from the school and Gloucestershire County Council pays for a small number of seats for pupils on one of them. "The coaches were inspected by the integrated transport unit after the council was contacted by the school after a parent had raised the issue directly with the school. "After inspection by our officers both coaches were found to be in an unsuitable condition to be used. "We contacted the police because our officers don't have the power to stop the coaches. "We take the safety of school children extremely seriously and didn't want to take any risks. The safety of the pupils was our priority." A Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency spokesperson said: "DVSA is aware of this incident but is unable comment on ongoing investigations." The DVSA is responsible for ensuring that vehicles are safe and it can report owners of unroadworthy vehicles to the Traffic Commissioner to have their license revoked if an offense has been committed. In a press release, the Traffic Commissioner said: "Operator license holders are required to meet undertakings and conditions relating to vehicle and driver safety standards. If evidence shows they have failed to do so, the Traffic Commissioner may, following a public inquiry, consider taking regulatory action. "Traffic commissioners do not have any investigatory powers and therefore rely on the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the Police and other agencies to carry out this work and report any adverse findings to them. "Keith Bevan and Dorothy Bevan trading as Travelrite Coaches hold a valid standard international operator's licence. The partnership is authorised to operate two vehicles from Station Road Garage, Milkwall, Coleford." After the coach was stopped one parent said: "It's really worrying because this happened on the last day of term but these coaches have been taking our children to and from school for the past year." Gloucestershire County Council assured parents that new transport arrangements would be made for the September term.
