Vandals are spoiling the fun for children from the Welsh Medium Playgroup who use Rockfield Community Centre on a Wednesday. On at least two occasions in the past three weeks a small glass window at the back of the building has been smashed, causing glass and mud to fall into the storeroom which houses the playgroup's toys Amanda Rice, who helps out at the playgroup, told the Beacon: "The children haven't been able to use these toys because they're covered in glass and mud. " We cleaned it all up the first time but it happened again the next day and it looks like they're doing it time and time again by the amount of glass and mud on the floor. "If it wasn't for another playgroup letting us use their toys we wouldn't be able to run." Those involved with the playgroup are not only angry with those responsible for the damage but also with the hall committee who they say have ignored requests to repair the window. "It doesn't necessarily need a new window put in - it just needs boarding up," said Amanda. The Chairman of the Hall Committee Terry Christopher, said he had made several phone calls to Monmouthshire County Council who were responsible for the maintenance of the hall and had been told the window would be repaired on Friday. The Committee were hoping to take over the management of the hall and had received a grant which they intended to use to provide more lighting on the footpath. "Hopefully we'll then have a facility in which all the community, particularly young people, can get involved and put on events. "Unfortunately, it's a minority who are causing damage and we mustn't let them beat us." Local police have been informed and have visited the centre to make a report. (The window has since been repaired.)
