THE Blake Theatre’s Andy Shakeshaft has been commissioned to write a play by Worcester-based theatre company Tree Shadow Theatre Productions.
The original work, titled “Waving Goodbye” is an emotionally charged black comedy, set in an airport lounge as two sisters await their flight home from holiday. It asks fundamental questions about existence and our relationships with each other.
In March earlier this year, the theatre company put out a call for a new and contemporary script that didn’t shy away from exploring big issues and what it is to be a young woman in today’s world.
Andy’s play was the outright winner.
He works at The Blake Theatre as the Technical Manager and teaches drama at Monmouth School, with a career as a playwright for the past 19 years fitting in around those roles.
He has won several national and international competitions, as well as having two plays marketed to schools by drama teaching resources group DramaWorks.
Andy said: ‘Tree Shadow Theatre Productions put out a national call for a brand new play for two women and I was incredibly lucky to have my play, ‘Waving Goodbye’ chosen by them as they had such a huge response from across the country.
“We have already had our first rehearsals and both Louisa and Lucy are very talented young actresses and with the experience of Anita Parry (What Would Helen Mirren Do?) as their director this is going to be a very exciting project.
The play will first be shown at Camden Fringe Festival from Saturday 22nd to Tuesday 25th August at the Phoenix Artist Club and will star Louisa Wilde and Lucy Theobald.
“What we’d really love is for lots of people, who are interested in the theatre and new productions, to get behind us in our crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter in order to help make this a huge success,” said Andy (pictured).
