Monmouthshire motorists are bracing for a wave of travel disruption this July, with a series of temporary road closures announced across the county to facilitate essential utility works and highway resurfacing.

Monmouthshire County Council's Head of Neighbourhood Services, Carl Touhig, has confirmed that multiple temporary traffic orders have been signed, meaning commuters will need to plan ahead and navigate several diversions.

Chief among the closures is a major resurfacing project on the A472. A 2.4-kilometre stretch from the A4042 junction, spanning Berthon Road and Pantypwyddyn Farm to Little Henrhiw in Usk, will close from July 16 to August 4. Operating daily between 9:30am and 3:30pm, the works will also automatically shut down the A472’s on and off slip roads to the A4042. Drivers will be rerouted via a signed diversion along the A4042, A40, A449, and A472.

Meanwhile, utility works will temporarily block several residential and rural routes. In Undy, Grange Road will close for a 60-metre stretch near Heol Gwyndaf on the evening of July 15, between 7pm and 11pm, for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water repairs.

Welsh Water is also behind a three-day closure on Sandy Lane in Caerwent. A 35-metre section heading southwest from the R136 Caerwent Road junction toward the M48 will shut from July 19 to July 21 between 8am and 4pm. Because Sandy Lane is a dead end, council officials confirmed no signed diversion can be provided, though property access will be maintained.

A series of telecom upgrades will also trigger short-term disruptions. On July 15, BT poling works will close a 180-metre section of Whitelye Road in Botany Bay from 9:30am to 3:30pm, with a detailed diversion route using Catbrook Road and the B4293.

Further poling and fibre installation works are scheduled elsewhere. Meadway in Rogiet will see a partial closure and a temporary one-way system introduced from Slade View on July 16. In Llanhennock, both Llanhennock Top Road (on July 20) and Glen Usk Road (on July 21) will face daytime closures. Finally, on July 20, BT fibre installation will shut down a parallel access road on the B4598 Kemeys Road in Llanfair Kilgeddin, though the main B4598 will remain fully open.

Under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, ignoring these closures is a punishable offence. The council assures residents that reasonable access to properties will be maintained throughout the works.
