PROPOSALS to transform the Bridge Inn, Chepstow, into a cafe, shop and apartments will be discussed at Monmouthshire County Council’s planning committee meeting on 4th October.
The public house is a Grade II listed building situated on Bridge Street next to the Old Wye Bridge.
Proposals are for the conversion of the ground floor of the Bridge Inn into a cafe and retail space, the first floor into a two bedroom flat and the second floor to be retained as a one bedroom flat. The planning application also proposes the creation of a pair of two-bedroom duplex apartments on the existing carpark behind the Bridge Inn.
The proposals had originally included two cottages in the car park instead of the two duplex apartments, but plans were amended in light of objections.
Natural Resources Wales had objected to the development of the cottages because of the flood risk, and Chepstow Town Council had recommended refusal because the proposed cottages would be out of character with the surrounding area.
The proposals had eight objections from members of the public.
Many complaints stated that the building would be overpowering and out of character as the location is a ‘Conservation Area’.
In the amended plans, the ground floor of the apartments would be used as storage, meaning the residents living in the first and second floor will be above the flood risk area.
