Proposals to implement a trial narrowing of the top of Monnow Street will not be going ahead.

Members and officers of Monmouthshire County Council met with consultants Hamilton-Baillie Associates earlier this week to assess the scheme and review proposals in light of feedback from the public.

The scheme had generated a great deal of interest, with significant concern that plans for better pedestrian access would also result in increased traffic congestion.

The plan, which was scheduled to be implemented at the start of February, would have seen areas of the carriage way between St John Street and Agincourt Square narrowed to just three metres.

It would also have restricted traffic from turning right out of St John Street.

Head of infrastructure and sustainability Roger Hoggins said: "We know that to improve pedestrian access increased traffic congestion would be inevitable, but we also acknowledge that such an experiment implemented in isolation could be counter productive, should a larger scheme be put proposed in the future.

"So we will now only consider narrowing vehicular access at the junction of Monnow Street and Agincourt Square in the context of a wider regeneration project."
