Monmouthshire County Council will be trialing an alternative road layout at the pinchpoint in Monnow Street from the end of this month.
The trial will involve a reduction in road width to allow single traffic only, operating on a 'give and take' basis between Agincourt Square and St John Street.
The trial will also include the prohibition of right turn movements from St John Street into Monnow Street.
A spokesperson for the council explained: "The current space in and around the pinchpoint area is formally recorded as an 'accident statistic site' by police and highway authorities.
"We want to explore a proposal made by consultants Hamilton-Baillee Associates, that reducing the carriageway width can regulate current driver behaviour while allowing us to improve the safety of pedestrians by increasing pavement widths.
"The trial will last between two and three months, after which the council has promised to share the results with the town before any permanent solutions are suggested.
"We have programmed the trial at the least busy time of the year to minimise disturbance to businesses.
"We ask that the town works with us to re-route where possible at peak times and report how the trial is impacting upon them through a specially arranged web page that will be operational during the trial."
