The abandoned narrowing of the 'pinch point' at the top of Monnow Street cost Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) about £6,500.
A large number of Beacon readers have been getting in touch to tell us how they feel.
Town groups and residents felt the trial, which was due to start at the beginning of this month, should have gone ahead, especially after a consultants fee had been paid to urban design specialists Ben Hamilton-Baillie.
Roger Hoggins, MCC's head of infrastructure and sustainability, said the decision to cancel the pinch point trial was not taken lightly.
"Local councillors have been involved in the development of the shared space concept and the proposed pinch point trial in particular," he said.
