SIR, Jonathan Badman is mistaken in thinking that his picture of a bull might have been taken at the back of Monnow Street, off Nailers Lane. Whilst there is still some similarity to buildings in this area, the scene is categorically of the old Cattle Market, looking across the Monnow which is behind the wall. The structure to the left of the photo is the former calf and pig pens building, whilst to the right are the former sheep pens. For greater clarity, readers are directed to the Museum's window display of photographs, specifically the scene of the elephant in the Monnow (reported in the Beacon 9th May 1930), where the building bearing the name G.Jones is shown from a different angle. I had suspected that the animal in Jonathan's photo might have been destined for an ox-roast, but neither of the beasts for 1902 or 1935 match the markings, and both lack the ring in the nose by which the bull in the market is being led. To the best of my knowledge, the late Derek Jones's father and grandfather traded as T.H.Jones, but they may have been related to G.Jones, builder and contractor. Robert Davis, (Osbaston)
