Llandogo is set for a new set of speed restrictions after a long campaign by villagers.
Chris Whitehouse, with the support of county councillor Debby Blakebrough, organised a petition of 100 signatures asking for a reduction in the speed limit from the very edge of the village north towards Bigswier Bridge.
Llandogo's plea to be heard on road calming is timely, as the Department for Transport have announced guidance to make it easier for local councils to introduce speed limits on rural roads.
Anyone who lives and works in Monmouthshire will not be surprised by statistics which show that rural roads present the highest risks and were accountable for 68 per cent of fatalities in 2010.
"As the councillor for Trellech United I was approached by Chris, who has lived in the village of Llandogo for 24 years," said Cllr Blakebrough.
"Chris has been involved in campaigns for speed restrictions since 1997. Motorists do not get enough warning to slowdown, which results in speeding and on frequent occasions also overtaking through the village.
"This is particularly dangerous as it passes the short side road that leads to the local primary school, village hall and children's public play area.
"I suggested Chris organise a petition to show strength of feeling while I prepared a case and secured a meeting with the Monmouthshire's traffic and network manager Paul Keeble.
"The good news is that the petition of 100 signatures provided me with the voice to be heard. Paul said he had sympathy with the request and promised he would arrange for traffic calming measures to be put in place.
"Within the next few weeks I will be having an onsite visit with Paul to explore and agree a strategy of action.
"Monmouthshire County Council strive to ensure that there is true engagement with its residents and I believe on this occasion we have been listened to and heard.
"I was so impressed with the support and energy of local residents in making this happen, particularly with Chris's tenacious drive not to give up even after 15 years.
"Over the next few months I will work closely with Monmouthshire County Councill and monitor any progress to ensure this project does not get lost or forgotten.
"I will present the petition in County Council to ensure the voice of Llandogo residents is formally registered and acknowledged."
