Sadly, everything the walker described in his/her letter (‘Walking troubles’, Beacon letters 27th November) is absolutely true.
The part of the Offa’s Dyke Path that’s going across Beaulieu Meadow has many times in the past been allowed to be churned up by pigs and made nigh impassable.
Their owner is not keen on people using this section of the public footpath. He has made this clear over the years by also allowing his big white dog(s) to run unmuzzled in the adjacent fields, barking furiously at everyone walking past, and has not prevented them from breaking out on numerous occasions, attacking walkers, neighbours, and other dogs.
Often, fear of retaliation has stopped these attacks from being reported. One good thing: Once we’ve climbed past Beaulieu Meadow and have reached the top of the hill, the views from it are as beautiful as ever - may loveliness always win!
