THE Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies raised record amounts at its Christmas open day, held on Sunday (2nd December).

Around 800 people visited the St Maugans farm to meet the ponies and enjoy various stalls and refreshments.

New ambassador Josie Pearson MBE, who won gold in the discuss at last year's Paralympics, was also on site to meet fans and learn more about the vital charity.

A total of £7,000 was raised for the horses and ponies in the society's care.

"This was our best ever open day," said charity chairman Jenny MacGregor MBE. "There were people pouring in from 11am and they were queuing to get in. I don't think it has been like that before.

"The majority of the money goes on feed for the winter. We are full up at the farm and we have three mountains with horses that we are taking hay up to. If anyone has any second grade hay for those animals, please get in touch."

Asked what had inspired her to become an ambassador for the horse hospital, Josie explained: "My background is horse-riding and began riding from the age of four.

"Unfortunately I had a car accident when I was 17 and broke my neck, so my aspirations of being an Olympic rider like Mary King ended.

"It changed everything for me, so I got involved in Paralympic sports, and after London and the world championships I wanted to give something back.

"This is a fantastic charity, it's always a battle every year to raise money to keep going. I love horses and it's a wonderful way of giving something back."
