SIR, I have been following the many letters on the forthcoming closure of the swimming pool over the past weeks. As an early morning swimmer the opinions expressed are similar to my own (with the exception of 'learn to swim in the river') so I have only sent my letters to council members and AM but after the 'swimming pool meeting' last Thursday I feel outraged. Every question I asked met with the reply it was still to be decided. Bearing in mind the plans for school and swimming pool would be submitted sometime in August, this was surprising. The pool doesn't have proper plans yet because swimmers need consulting. My views are important, what would I like? 25m, a diving area. Well at present the pool provides me with everything I want. I am new to the area and know very little about Monmouth Comprehensive School but from the look of it I can imagine they are desperately in need of a new school. Having moved, I recognised many design features in the plans that were used in the rebuilding of a school in Berkshire. This rebuild is now under investigation because of the vast amounts of money spent only to find many areas of the school are unusable and further money is needed to remodel for the pupils to work in a safe learning environment. As my own children have long since left education this superficial 'whizzy' design doesn't fill me with anxiety as it will many parents. The potential extra costs do. Another of my concerns over the plans shown is that it wil not blend with any of the surrounding buildings new or old. It is reminiscent of 'The Tricorn', a car park in Portsmouth, widely acknowledged as the third ugliest building in Britain, before it was subsequently demolished. I would like to be able to say who I spoke to, but not one of the council members present wore badges. The council did not collect names or numbers of the public looking at plans to review attendance of the meeting. These plans are pure fairytales if everything hasn't been decided yet. And if that is the case how are plans going to be ready before the end of August? Was this just a PR 'tick the box' exercise? Please can the council provide us with the plans of the school and pool they are going to submit and tell us honestly what they intend to do? Jackie Poulter (Monmouth)
