A COMMUNITY space has reopened its doors after a refurbishment programme.
Sedbury Space, a not-for-profit organisation set up by local volunteers, has been renovated so it can be used by the wider community.
The newly-refurbished Gaff Youth Club building on King Alfred’s Road in Sedbury now includes a new and extended kitchen and facilities, a new disabled toilet, decking for outside, and a cafe area.
The group reached its £55,000 fundraising target last September, and held a ‘grand opening’ on Sunday (15th April).
The organisation has benefitted from significant grants from Gloucestershire-based charities including Barnwood Trust, Gloucestershire Environmental Trust and the Summerfield Trust, to make the remodelling possible. Two Rivers Housing Association, which own the building, has also made a significant investment, providing a 10 year lease on peppercorn rent.
Now the works have been completed, it is hoped that activities that have been on hold during the building works, will restart, including a homework club and refreshments for the local ‘Walking for Health’ group. The centre is also planning to launch new activities, including a weekly One Stop Café, where people can come for coffee, cake and company, a listening ear, a helping hand and expert advice.
Rev Janice Hamilton, Tidenham’s Parish Community Minister said: “Sunday was a brilliant celebration, the lady who cut the ribbon was involved in the original consultation and we had a fantastic celebration.
“There will be different activities at different times as we are reliant on a committee and volunteers to keep things running. We want people to engage with us and we have a new group starting soon, Knit and Natter for Charity,” she added.
Sedbury Space has been selected as one of the three good causes Tesco has chosen to go to a customer vote during May and June. You can cast your vote at Tesco Stores, Chepstow or Tesco Express, Bulwark. The money received will go towards landscaping the back yard to make it accessible and extend the welcome at Sedbury Space.
