Sir,

I am writing this letter, my first letter to The Beacon, to complain about the service – or lack of, provided by the Monmouthshire Council. Today the 22nd of December, I awoke to more ice and snow – living in Jeffery Drive I was concerned about moving my van for work and rightly so, the road was treacherous.

I am a local business man and proprietor of Rockfield Property Services, I am a community minded individual and sponsor two local sports teams, employ local people and I feel that I have been badly let down by the Monmouthshire Council again this year.

I was unable to move the van as the roads had not been gritted, leaving Jeffery Drive like a sheet of ice. The four people that were working for me today had to be laid off for the day, on full pay might I add, as Christmas is so close. The delivery that I had arranged from Chepstow had to be cancelled and will not be available to re-deliver until the New Year. The cost of the day already running into hundreds of pounds, hundreds of pounds that could have been avoided, and it was only last week the council were bragging in the local press about the massive store of salt they had for this year and that we would not have the problems we have had in previous years!

After ringing the Council and being referred to the Highways department and then back again to the council, I gave up on that approach. I wonder whether the postman will be able to deliver my council tax bill?

After leaving The Beacon I am returning home to grit the roads myself, as not only is it stopping business and work for some individuals, it is lethal for elderly people and children living in the area. I know that my road was not the only one around the town in this state and I feel worried for other individuals and felt it was my duty to complain and give the Council the opportunity to explain why Monmouth was left in this state once again.
