PROPOSALS to demolish Monmouth Comprehensive School will go before planners next Tuesday (7th July).

The school is being knocked down to construct a new building under the Welsh Government's 21st Century School programme.

The town's new six lane swimming pool will also be integrated into the school (see above).

Monmouth Comprehensive's footprint will measure approximately 5,659 metres square, and will connect with the existing leisure centre building.

The new school, located to the south-west of its current site, in the same location as the existing school buildings, will be designed to accommodate 1,600 pupils.

It will be three storeys high and measure approximately 11.6m in height.

There will be 93 staff car parking spaces with coach, minibus and taxi drop off points, as well as a visitor car parking area with 14 spaces.

Monmouth Town Council recommended the plans for approval but suggests the school is not large enough for present or future pupil capacity.

It said that Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) projections for 2020 show an increase of pupil numbers to 1,700.

The application for the school has received seven letters objecting to plans and two letters of support.

In the report to go before the MCC planning committee it says: "Monmouthshire County Council's 21st Century School project is aimed to transform teaching and learning throughout Monmouthshire, such as to provide learners with the best life and work chances and an opportunity for them to reach their full potential.

"The existing school is at the end of its useful life and no longer suitable for the current or future curriculum."
