COUNCILLOR Bob Watkins took office as the new Chairman of Raglan Community Council at the council's Annual Meeting, held last week.
He succeeds Cllr Mrs Marjorie Chilcott who reflected on an eventful year of office.
Cllr Mrs Chilcott said the council had had two main objectives - the first was to reduce the speed of traffic on the Chepstow Road. An action committee had been formed and, although slow, progress was being made. The second objective was to erect a war memorial in memory of those from the community who had lost their lives during the Second World War. That too was progressing and it was hoped the memorial would soon be in place at the Market Cross.
Litter continued to be a problem, said Cllr Mrs Chilcott, but she hoped the purchase of four new litter bins for the village would help resolve the problem.
She ended by congratulating the Chairman (Trevor Phillips) and members of Raglan-in-Bloom who had worked exceedingly hard during the past year. "Without people like them, our village wouldn't be as beautiful as it is."
Cllr Watkins thanked councillors for the honour of electing him chairman. He said it was a shame that more members of the public did not attend meetings of the council, and that younger people could not be attracted to come forward to serve on the council .
The Chairman's Service will be held on June 17th at St Cadoc's Church, Raglan.
