Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has published a paper setting out the future of Nevill Hall Hospital, under the new definition of an ‘enhanced local general hospital’, with a focus on delivering care closer to home.
They describe the hospital’s role as follows: Elective day surgery for orthopaedics, ophthalmology, and general surgery; An integrated urgent care ‘front door’ model, especially tailored for older patients; A women’s health hub combining outpatient, diagnostic, and treatment services; Expanded mental health and learning disability services; A minor injury unit for non-critical care; A new cancer services unit, including radiotherapy in partnership with Velindre NHS Trust; Enhanced diagnostic services (MRI, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, etc.); Inpatient beds for a range of medical needs; Children’s services for young people with specific needs; Therapy services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy; Facilities for partner organisations (e.g. social services) to support integrated care.
Investment in the buildings will focus on long-term remediation of the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) and general upgrades to buildings and facilities.
The health board proposes centralising respiratory care at the Grange University Hospital, but Nevill Hall will serve as a hub for diabetes outpatient care and cataract services for the wider Gwent region.
