SIR,
In addition to writing about the success of Monmouth Music Theatre's recent scintillating production, I would like to repair certain glaring omissions in the anonymous review of My Fair Lady in the Beacon of 28th April.
The story revolves around Eliza Dolittle and her desire to climb the social ladder by improvement in her speech and manners. The young actress and singer, Louise Miller, who unfortunately was barely mentioned in the review, undertook the role with all the qualities required.
She had a superb voice and a clear understanding of Eliza's character, changing from the gauche and immature flower seller to the sophisticated, elegant and beautiful young woman who could charm even a Hungarian diplomat. This actress deserves full appreciation for the quality of her performance in all aspects.
Added to this, the cameo parts of the outrageously eccentric Mrs Eynsford-Hill, played by Ann Hartland and the exquisite portrayal of Mrs Higgins by Jill Rogers, were excellent.
The piano interludes, played by Helen Stidolph during the sometimes long scene changes, were an additional pleasure. As usual the backbone of the production was the competence and liveliness of the chorus.
Many congratulations to all who put this show together.
