Rumours that Monmouth's Nelson Museum is to close have been denied by Monmouthshire County Council.

But the authority admits there is a question mark hanging over the museum's current home in Priory Street.

The Beacon understands a move to the Shire Hall is a posibility.

Monmouthshire's chief officer for regeneration and culture, Kellie Beirne, said: "Continuing financial constraints require us to look creatively at re-modelling and re-designing services to ensure that we can maintain them for the benefit of the community and the local economy.

"This commitment to services means we ensure they continue to exist and serve communities in sustainable ways.

"The museum in Monmouth forms an integral part of our heritage and culture and the only work we're examining is simply the continued feasibility of it within its current location.

"Closure is not an option under consideration. This is an opportunity to enhance and create a higher profile for one of our cultural assets against a backdrop of continuing cuts and to ensure we have a viable plan for funding and operating services in the future."
