MONMOUTH'S MP has slammed a county prison after a murderer went on the run from Usk last week.

Wyndham Richard Thomas, who was sentenced to life in prison in 1997 for aggravated burglary and murder, absconded from HMP Prescoed last Wednesday (22nd September) and was deemed a risk to the public by police.

The 33-year-old was arrested at an address in the Caerphilly area last Saturday (25th September) after a large-scale police operation.

A 39-year-old woman from the Caerphilly area was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

MP David Davies has called for an inquiry following the incident.

"The latest news does not come as a surprise as it is not the first time serious prisoners have escaped this prison," he said.

"Local residents have the right to be reassured that this individual was properly assessed before being put into an open prison with no security.

"I have written to the governor to ask for more information on how this placement was made.
