COUNCIL workers in Monmouthshire have been exceptionally busy dealing with the severe weather sweeping across the UK today (Monday 23rd December).

Heavy rain and strong winds have already led to localised flooding and fallen trees but highways and grounds staff are coping well with weather-related problems across the county.

The A40 between Abergavenny and Crickhowell was blocked due to a fallen tree but was cleared earlier this afternoon. Meanwhile, many other roads are passable with care.

The main source of flooding is from surface water with residents making a number of requests for sand bags. A flood warning is on place on the River Usk.

The council has its usual contingency plans in place to deal with any continuing severe weather over the Christmas holiday.

Residents are advised to contact the council's website http://www.monmouthshire.gov.uk">www.monmouthshire.gov.uk or Twitter site @monmouthshirecc for further updates.
