Rockfield Rovers started their New Year campaign in the Gwent County Division Three with an emphatic result.
Rovers have been looking for the right result in the league since 27th September, 2008, having played 14 games in their league so far, Rovers have lost nine and won five with the right result coming to them last Saturday when they hosted Top of the Division Three League Llanwern RTB and beat them 3-2.
The game started off real sloppy for the first 20 minutes for Rockfield but fortunately they never conceded a goal. Once they settled down and started to relax and played football Rockfield scored with a shot from Karl Psczcola on the 26th minute, Rockfield then dominated the next 15 minutes but were punished by a lack of concentration from a corner where Llanwern RTB equalised four minutes before the half time whistle.
The second half saw Rockfield on the back foot from the off but they soon settled down and got back into the rhythm they found in the first half, with some good football. Daniel Macdonald put Rockfield back in front on the 53rd minute.
Rockfield kept the pressure on and were again rewarded for their hard work and great play with a third goal from Daniel Macdonald which was disallowed by the referee because of an injured player from Llanwern RTB and the Referee stated after the game that he allowed play to resume until Rovers lost the ball, which was when Rockfield had a shot which was pushed away by the Llanwern keeper and into the path of Daniel Macdonald to put it into the back of the net.
However this did not faze Rockfield as some eight minutes later Paul Perella netted Rovers third goal on the 75th minute again came with some good football being played by all.
Llanwern did not give up their fight and pushed Rockfield to their limit and with five minutes to go Rockfield conceded a penalty which was netted home, with Rockfield keeper Tim Circus getting a hand to it, but not enough to keep it out of the net.
Rockfield held on with some true grit to get their first victory in the league since last September. This is Rockfield first year in the Gwent County League and they are finding the standard of football better than they previously played in.
Player Manager David Macdonald said the club has what it takes to win this league and have been narrowly losing games by the odd goal.
Rockfield have had bad luck over with injuries, but hopefully with this result they can build on it and stay in this league.
Rockfield Rovers next match is on Saturday 10th January against Cwmbran Centre FYP in the last 16 of the Amateur Cup.
