VE Day decorated windows have been vibrantly designed in Church Street, Monmouth, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of this special day.

Many shops in Monmouth have decorated their windows in remembrance of the end of World War II in Europe, giving an insight into an alternative way of still learning about our history in an interactive way.

Owner and founder of Creates in Monmouth, Ben Price, decorated their shop window, and said: “We need to keep the history alive, to honour our fallen heroes, we owe it to them.”

Mr Price decorated his window in a woodland, animal VE day celebration, making many of the decorations from scratch.

Mr Price used materials such as cardboard, expanding foam and paint to create this display.

“I’ve never needle felted before so I thought I would give it a try.”

“The result ended up with several woodland animals, I started with the squirrels and that soon led to the robin, magpies and hedgehog.”

Mr Price’s grandma received a letter when she was seven at school and she is now 87 from King George VI which was dated June 8, 1946.

Mr Price’s grandma sent over the letter which he used as part of the display in the shop window.

“I will treasure this letter forever, and I am so proud to be able to display it in our window.” said Mr Price.

An array of shops were decorated, including Extons, Brown and Brown, Rosser’s Chemist and Dogs Trust.

There are multiple events taking place in Monmouth over the next few days which will be accompanied by many members of the community.

The idea of all the window displays in Monmouth is to dress the windows in Red, white and blue with a prize being given to the best one.
