Monmouth School has recorded a CD of all 580, and their teachers, singing Christmas Carols.
The whole School sings so well together each week in assembly that the School's Director of Music, David Lawson, asked the Headmaster, Dr. Steven Connors, if it would be possible to make a recording of the School's Christmas Carol Service, in order to capture the remarkable sound 640people make when they sing together. The CD, to be called Unto Us is Born a Son, will contain all items from the Carol Service, including all the readings, prayers, musical items and performances by the School's Brass Band and Choral Society.
For each CD sold, the School will make a donation to the charity Help for Heroes, which provides help and support for British ex-service personnel who have been injured in conflict.
Director of Music David Lawson said, 'Hearing the boys sing well never fails to leave an impression, so we felt we should find a way to capture that sound and give them all a memento of the sound of their school days. Everyone who took part will have his or her name in the booklet, so it will make a great present for Christmas 2009'.
The recording took place at St. Mary's Church in Monmouth on Tuesday 9th December. Conducted by David Lawson, the sound engineer for the recording was Paul Arden-Taylor, who has also worked with the London Symphony Orchestra. The CD will be available in the spring.
