SIR,

Recently the Monmouthshire Politburo came up with two brilliant schemes for Monmouth.

One was to narrow the narrow end of Monnow Street even further in order to create bottlenecks.

The other was to cut down fine mature trees along Hereford Road.

Under strong pressure from the Monmouth population and the Monmouthshire Beacon columns these two mad schemes were dropped. We need to be told whether anyone in Cwmbran was disciplined or sacked.

But the Politburo never sleeps and is ever concerned about our welfare. So, the proposal now, published by their Legal Services in your paper, is to ban parking along Hereford Road.

Naturally enough, their crass notice says nothing about where people who live in Hereford Road are to park their cars. On pavements; on roofs?

They laughingly say the scheme is "to raise the level of highway safety". An example of politburo-speak where 'yes' means 'no'.

When during my lengthy campaign to slow down traffic along Hereford Road I met representatives of the police, who pointed out that parking there helps to slow traffic down.

They speak of 'obstructive parking'. The only obstruction that builds up is when Monmouth School coaches ferry girls. The problem could be resolved if the school were forced to build an approach road to avoid Hereford Road. Here, for a change, the Politburo could do some good.
