The Monmouth Millennium Mosaic Wheel has been damaged and will need tailored tiles for it to be repaired.

The wheel was unveiled to commemorate the millennium, and it is a ceramic mosaic by the Monnow Bridge installed by Monmouth Town Council.

The wheel is made up of 40 tiles holding parts of history within each one for over 2,000 years, but has recently been damaged.

Police have been informed about this occurrence and have provided a statement.

“We received a report of criminal damage, after tiles on a monument on Cinderhill Street were damaged between 4pm on Tuesday April 1 and 3pm on Wednesday April 2.”

“Investigating officers carried out CCTV and house-to-house enquiries.”

“If anyone has any information that could help us identify those responsible, please contact us by calling 101, messaging us on social media, or making a report on our website, quoting 2500104981.”

Mayor of Monmouth, Councillor David Evans, spoke to the Beacon and said action will be taken to restore the monument.

“Unfortunately in the last few weeks it’s started to get damaged, we believe by skateboarders using it for tricks,” he said.

“It’s really unfortunate because it was in pristine condition when we had this whole area renovated.”

The monument will be repaired following contact with the original artist but, due to the mosaic being so unique the artist will have to make new tiles specifically for the sculpture.

The money will have to come out of the Town Council’s reserves, with the sculpture being of value to the community as it added a recollection of some of the history in Monmouth of over 25 years.

“It’s really disappointing as we are doing our upmost to make this the most pleasant space it can be” .Said Mayor David Evans.
