THE Boat House Gift shop and gallery in Monmouth have been left damaged after floodwater swept through the building during Storm Claudia.

People are rallying together to help householders and businesses hit by unprecedented flooding in Monmouth. A major incident has been declared in the town by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service with crews helping dozens of people to safety.  Natural Resources Wales (NRW) had issued four severe flood warnings amid concern of a "significant risk to life" with the River Monnow reaching record levels, exceeding those recorded during Storm Dennis in 2020 and Storm Bert in 2024.

The independent shops, which showcase work from local artists, saw parts of the gallery space and display soaked as water rose rapidly in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“We’ve had a very busy 48 hours, clearing out lots of mud and river water, trying to salvage as much as can.

“We’ve had a sale of some soggy paintings; people have been very kind and buying lots of work.

“A huge shout out to everyone who’s come and helped; we’ve had a guy come down all the way from Birmingham.

“We couldn’t get into one of our shops until yesterday afternoon because the water was so high. We finally got in this morning, and it was just devastation. There was stuff everywhere, lots of ruined goods and half the river basically.

In a devastating time the community are actively working together, lending out help to those who really need it.
