ROADWORKS will be in place in Monmouth for a number of months while works take place to connect a 340-house development to the town’s sewage network.

The new sewage pipe will run from the Kingswood Gate development onto Wonastow Road, following the Link Road, joining Portal Road and Cinderhill Street, before passing underneath the new River Monnow Bridge and up Blestium Street where it will connect to the existing sewer near Chippenham playing fields.

The works will take place in a number of stages, and is expected to take around nine months to complete, with work to be completed by June 2018.

Work began last week on the first sections, with work taking place on Portal Road and Cinderhill Street. This work will be completed by December in a bid to prevent disruption in the run up to Christmas.

Work on Wonastow Road and the Link Road will take place between November and March 2018, while work on Blestium Street will take place between December and February 2018.

Matthew Humphreys, senior delivery manager, Welsh Water said: “Welsh Water supports development and growth in our operating area wherever possible and these upgrade works are necessary to facilitate development in Monmouth.

“We are aware of the inconvenience that work such as this may cause. We have therefore carefully planned the work and worked closely with the housing developers and Monmouthshire Council to minimise disruption to traffic and local residents.  To ensure customers are kept informed, we have written to local residents to inform them of the essential work. Residents and business owners will also be kept informed via social media updates and regular communications as the work progresses.”

Mike Jones, highways network manager, Monmouthshire County Council added: “We have been working with Welsh Water to enable this work, which will benefit the residents of the King’s Wood Gate Estate.  The works have been programmed to avoid disruption during the busy Christmas shopping period.”
