It was a year ago that Monmouth sprinter Ryan Lee started competing at the Aviva Welsh Schools Track and Field at Brecon.

Last Saturday (2nd July) saw Ryan competing in the 100m and 200m for Year 10 and 11 students.

There were two heats in each event with the first three qualifying from each heat, plus the two fastest losers.

Ryan was third in his 100m heat and second in his 200m heat, qualifying him for both finals.

The 200m was first and Ryan finished fourth but smashed his personal best from 23.52 to 22.77 with a legal wind.

The 100m final was highly competitive, Ryan was a little disappointed with sixth but had a decent time of 11.44, not a personal best. Ryan still has slight issues with his start.

The south east 100m relay team came in third with Ryan running a very quick final leg, so they all received bronze medals.

A good day with mixed emotions for Ryan as, if he had finished third in the 200m, he would of been considered for a place in the Welsh team to compete in the final of the UK school games held in Sheffield in September, still a very good day overall for Ryan with a fantastic 200m time.

Ryan will continue to compete most weekends in Wales and south east England up until September for his club Cwmbran, and also will represent south east Wales at various meetings.
