FC TREFYNWY Reserves striker Rob Mills scored a hat-trick to earn his side their first victory of the season by beating Whitecross Wanderers 8-2 at home in the HFA League Division Three fixture last Sunday.
Sporting their newly sponsored kit (courtesy of Amber Taxis), the team performed magnificently. Player/manager Simon Williams opted for a 4-5-1 formation which proved to be very successful. Midfield maestro Mark King got Trefynwy off to a great start with two early goals, the second, a right foot rasper from 20 yards. The team defended stoutly under first half pressure from Wanderers - the back line of Goddard, Parker, Lee Newell, Foo-Man Evans and Keane (in goal) were outstanding in their duties.
The second half produced an entertaining eight goal feast for the spectators. Trefynwy were creative in their play with Frost, Morris, King, Roocroft and Williams combining with lovely one touch football. Mills grabbed his first and Trefynwy's third with a typical poacher's strike following good play from Roocroft.
Wanderers hit back with two strikes, however, Trefynwy did not buckle under pressure. A last ditch tackle from Goddard, when a certain goal looked on the cards, proved an important moment in the game. Mills re-established a two goal advantage with another fine effort following a run from super sub Simon Wookey.
With 20 minutes to go Mills capped a fine performance by completing his hat trick with an effortless strikers' shot. By now Trefynwy were well on top and were beginning to entertain the spectators with a Brazilian like showboating display.
Their final three goals were all worthy candidates for Match of the Day Goal of the Month, Roocroft scoring the sixth with a fantastic strike. Wookey added a seventh when he burst through the Wanderers' defence with a blistering show of pace and cool finish. The final goal, and probably the best of the day, came from substitute Martin Newell, when he lobbed the keeper from 25 yards with stunning technique and accuracy.
This was an important result for the side and now they can look forward to building their season from this stunning victory.
FC Trefynwy would like to thank Amber Taxis for their kind sponsorship and would also like to thank Sam and Lyn Fletcher of the Three Horseshoes for their continued support in supplying a new match ball for the game.
