SIR,
An open letter to Moyna Wilkinson, deputy chief executive of Monmouthshire County Council.
Dear Ms Wilkinson,
I am writing to you, as a resident of Monmouth, to add my voice to those other residents who wish for the market to return to its place in the market square, outside the Shire Hall.
The Shire Hall is a magnificent building but since the market has been displaced it looks lifeless and soulless.
I have not heard one person in Monmouth say that they wish for the market to remain in the car park at the bottom of town.
The idea of having "niche markets" at the Shire Hall is just not acceptable.
I have seen them there, mainly in the run-up to Christmas, and the small amount of stalls, selling whimsical items, look lost.
I cannot wait until the market returns to its rightful place, under the arches and on the cobbles of the historical market place in Monmouth.
I would also like to say that the local people are totally fed up with being fobbed-off by the powers that be with regard to this issue.
We have signed petitions and answered questionnaires stating categorically that the market be allowed to return to its proper place, but no one seems to listen to what we say.
I hope that the meeting that was held last Monday (9th May) does not turn out to be another useless exercise for the local populace.
