SIR,

Last Wednesday (1st December) I braved the bitter weather to visit the shops in Monmouth – and witnessed a miracle.

Many times I have passed the newly restored Shire Hall, admiring its perfect facade but thinking how sad and lonely it looked, shut away from the town behind its padlocked railings.

Agincourt Square was alive again with a Christmas market.

There were stalls under the arches and on the cobbles, and music.

There was a smile again on Monmouth's face.

Please, please restore the Friday and Saturday markets to their rightful place and keep Monmouth smiling.
