CHEPSTOW coastguard have found a body in the River Severn.

Police believe the body to be that of a man who fell from from the Wye Bridge in the town on 12th February.

The body was found close to the Beachley slipway, less than 50 yards from both the coastguard and Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) headquarters.

Both Gwent and Gloucestershire Police were alerted by the coastguard at around 3.30pm yesterday afternoon (12th March) and both forces attended the scene.

As has been stated by Chepstow coastguard on Twitter, the team made the gruesome discovery whilst aiding Forest of Dean District Council contractors with the removal of a large gas cylinder near to Beachley slipway.

They later tweeted: "Tasked 12.03.13 at 15:42 whilst attending previous incident, Chepstow Coastguard discovered a person in River Severn near M48 Severn Bridge".

The body was carried the short distance to the coastguard building. SARA were also in attendance.

The body of the man has yet to be identified.
