"MAKE Wyesham safe for our children" is the plea going out to Monmouthshire County Council from people living on the estate.
The plea comes after an accident at Woodland View when a car went out of control and crashed into the side of flats at Woodland View where children had been playing minutes earlier.
Cllr Mrs Caroline Pearce told colleagues on Monmouth Town Council that they must urge the County Council to review their schedule of traffic calming measures to enforce the 30 mph speed limit.
She said a car had sped around Woodland View Circle, mounted the verge and gone into the edge of the flats.
"We have got to make our children safe," she said. "They could have been killed if they hadn't been called in for tea.
"We don't want to be here in a year asking the Council to do it because someone has died.
"We appeal to the County Council to make Wyesham safe for our children so they are not afraid to play outside our homes," she said.
She was supported by Cllr Johnanthan Russell. The county had a lax attitude to traffic problems in Wyesham. They had previously asked for something to be done about the junction at Mayhill and the lighting on Redbrook Road. An audit had been done by the County Council and police about the speed and there was still a problem.
He said they should ask the county to review all these problems and give a timetable of when work was going to happen.
Cllr Mrs Maureen Roach, who is also a county councillor, said the problem was money. They were robbing Peter to pay Paul, but she would take the issue to the County Council. She had been trying to get traffic calming measures introduced since she was on the last council.
Mr Russell pointed out that the Town Council had precepted last year for more lighting in Redbrook Road and the County Council said they were looking into it.
Cllr Marcus Roach said it was a good opportunity for the Town Council to do something. They should set aside a budget for road calming in areas where they could ask the County Council to match the amount they set aside.
Cllr Gary Witcombe said there had been a serious problem for some time with cars speeding in Woodland Road. Only minutes before this incident children had been playing there and the incident could have been much more serious.
Local residents had organised a petition and contacted the MP to ask for traffic calming. He said the Council should write to the County Council asking for traffic calming to be installed as soon as possible.
Cllr Mrs Eileen Goodrich agreed with Mr Roach that the Town council should put some money aside for highways, but they had to be careful about "double rating" because the County Council already precepted for highways.
Cllr Charles Boase said the Town Council's Amenities Committee had also discussed the issue and had asked the Clerk to arrange a meeting with the County Council to talk about traffic calming. He was aware it was not cheap, but lives were not cheap either.
Mr Roach said they should ensure that if a traffic calming system was installed it should not just be a bump in the road which caused problems for ambulances.
