A MAGOR fundraiser is getting set to take part in ‘The World’s Toughest Row’ next year, hoping to raise £50,000 for Diabetes UK.
Monty Williams and the rest of Team Oarstruck will be competing in the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, with the 3,000-mile route starting in Spain and finishing in Antigua. The annual event begins in early December, with around 30 teams participating in the race.
The team of four, Monty, Hugo Thompson, John Morgan and Joel Wood from Caerleon and Newport met as schoolfriends and are preparing to tackle the challenge next year.
Rowing for between 40 and 90 days and dealing with 40-foot waves on the route, the team will row for two hours on and two hours off for 24 hours a day until they reach the Caribbean. The team’s boat is approximately 7.5 metres long and features a small cabin which is the only protection teams have from the elements.
Donations for the crew’s challenge are being sought, with the team hoping to raise a total of £120,000 for the cost of the race and the charity.
Supporters can donate £250 and claim a space on the boat for their name, company or logo.
The team will be attending a number of events and shows over the course of their fundraising campaign.
