Osbaston and Vauxhall is a desirable suburb, north of Monmouth which was once the site of a forge used in the production of iron, using the power of the River Monnow.

The Osbaston Weir, which is associated with the forge is a Grade II listed building. In 1899, Osbaston became the site of one of the first publicly owned electricity generating stations in the country. And since the installation of the new fish pass and hydro-electric technology in 2009, it provides electricity for around 150 homes as well as allowing migratory salmon up the river to spawn. One of the most notable houses in the area is Osbaston House, currently sold, subject to contract with Parrys Fine & Country. As a Georgian villa overlooking the Monnow, woods and hills beyond, over the years it has been home to a number of illustrious personages, including the High Sheriff of Gwent and remains one of the finest homes in Monmouth. On the other side of the river Monnow lies Vauxhall Fields, formerly the site of Monmouth Show and now used for fairs, rallies, festivals and other events. The Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers’ ’Vauxhall camp’ can also be found here (if you have the right security permissions!) Fun fact: Vauxhall Fields was once the home of Monmouth Races. Ordinance Survey maps from 1900 clearly show the racetrack around the area.Your local Fine & Country agent can provide a professional valuation, as well as unrivalled insight into the climate of your local marketplace.
