Llandogo Primary School opened its doors to welcome teachers from schools in Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland and Estonia as part of a British Council scheme to create partnerships across Europe and improve education standards.

Staff from Llandogo Primary School have been visiting their partners and working on joint projects during the last two years through the Comenius programme, which is funded by the European Commission and managed in the UK by the British Council.

The programme provides funding and professional development to enable students and teachers across Europe to work together and learn about each other's culture and education methods.

Llandogo headteacher Rachel Dare said: "We are very excited to be part of this project so that we can enhance the lives of our children in terms of their understanding and respect of others in Europe.

"Being aware of how we function within a global community will open opportunities for children and teachers to enrich and excite the learning at all the schools involved throughout Europe."

Students and teachers will be working together on projects to build an understanding of their partners' languages and cultures and to gain skills for their future lives and careers.

During their visit to Wales the European teachers, who stayed in Tintern, took part in classroom activities, visits to other Monmouthshire schools and cultural activities.

They spent time exploring the picturesque Wye Valley, including visits to Tintern Abbey and the Old Station and also met Welsh Government Minister for Education and Skills Leighton Andrews during a visit to the National Assembly for Wales Senedd building in Cardiff Bay.

On Friday the group visited Monmouth Comprehensive School (MCS) where  they were given an introductory talk and  tour by headteacher Vaughan Davies.

This was followed by a discussion on learning experiences with members of the Modern Foreign Languages Department and MCS students.

The experience was an excellent opportunity to share and learn from each other and build upon their understanding of  the transitions between Primary and Secondary.

The visit ended with an evening meal at Llandogo's Milleniom Hall during which invited guests heard about the school management structures and the pedagogical approaches each school takes.

The evening was rounded off with a presentation of certificates to each of the visiting heads by chair of governors, Louise Bailey and Llandogo's headteacher Rachel Dare.

Local councillor, Bob Dagger, who organised the evening, also thanked Yvonne Davies and the caterering staff for a wonderful meal and Karen Williams for helping with the laptop presentations.
