THE volunteers who are battling laurel and bramble to restore the site of the old maternity hospital Cefn Ila are seeking help.
The group has been working at the Woodland Trust site with much support from the charity for more than a year and are asking for people to help with the project.
Many residents have connections with the site and are being asked to restore them and help by volunteering. Volunteer Anne said: “I remember the arboretum from visiting my mother and newly born sister here. Now I’m relishing the chance to help return this place to its position as a vibrant centre for the community”
The site has a large new woodland planted for the children born and adopted in Wales which many people enjoy walking in. The volunteers are focusing on restoring the arboretum, walled garden and orchard to their former glory.
Amelia Lake, community development officer for the site, said: “We are looking for help from anyone who has time or skills, wants to learn new things, meet new people or get involved in a place that is so important for this area.
“This site is for local people so we are welcoming local people to a volunteer experience day on Sunday 31st January.
“Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience.”
There is the chance to help by being a ranger, events volunteer, helping with construction or simply coming along to join in the regular work parties.
The work parties which run on the first and third Wednesday of each month are complemented with an additional one on the last Sunday of each month during the winter months. This gives the group the chance to clear invasive species, restock the arboretum and battle the brambles in the walled garden.
The taster session on the 31st will invite people to get to know the site a little and join in with some tasks to help bring back Cefn Ila to its former glory. There will also be a fire to stay warm and hot tea and coffee provided. The day will run from 10am to 3pm and all children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
