CHEPSTOW will become the eager recipient of its first flea market, which will coincide with the farmer's produce market on Saturday 28th June. The event is estimated to take up the entirety of the high street, with an overflow of stalls leading down to the riverside. The idea was conjured up by friends Sarah Leyfield and Gill Fortescue, after Sarah visited a huge flea market in France. "Sarah came back full of enthusiasm about the idea of a flea market in Chepstow," said Gill. "So we went along to a Chepstow Town Council meeting and pitched the idea. "They were very supportive and keen. We've never done anything like it so just learning as we go along." So far the reaction has been very positive, with over 60 people enquiring about holding a space in the market. The dynamic duo hope to fill the high street, which has enough space for 50 stalls, with roughly the same number available along the riverside. The pair are hoping to make it an annual thing depending on the response. "It will be mainly bric-a-brac and antiques, as we are unable to provide the license for selling produce," Gill said. "However the farmer's market will be on at the same time so there will be plenty of delicious food around." In order to participate, simply email [email protected]">[email protected] with your enquiries. Each space costs £10, and you are required to supply your own table, but it is not necessary. "You could even just bring a rug," said Gill. "It's cheap and cheerful. The response has been great, and one of the wonderful things is people are even making wares specially for the day, that they may never have been inspired to do otherwise. "It's bringing people together who may not have met otherwise." Gill, who has lived in Tutshill for the past five years, met Sarah at Chepstow's The Castle Inn four years ago, becoming fast friends. The intrepid partnership even share the same birthday.
