Town Councillor Xavier Turner has demanded an apology from Labour Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, after he claimed that she admitted during September’s full council meeting — under pressure from a Freedom of Information disclosure and media coverage — that a proposal to close Kymin View Primary School had been considered.
This follows months of denials. In July 2025, Cllr Brocklesby emailed residents, accusing Cllr Turner and Conservative Opposition Leader Cllr Richard John of misinformation:
“There are no plans to close Kymin School, there never has been. I consider it highly irresponsible and disappointing that Cllr John has been so cavalier in spreading misinformation in Wyesham. It is unacceptable scaremongering… for what appears to be for electoral advantage.”
Cllr Turner said: “The Labour Leader used carefully worded statements and semantics to accuse me of 'scaremongering' and 'spreading misinformation' for 'electoral advantage' during the July 2025 by-election, downplaying the real threat to Kymin View.
"Now,” he claims, “Cllr Brocklesby has acknowledged there were 'proposals' to close the school and relocate the Welsh-medium school, while claiming it didn’t 'amount to a plan'." He highlighted the timeline:
· 12 February 2025: Presentation to councillors on phased closure.
· Post-seminar: Meeting with Kymin View governors and teachers.
· July 2025: Letter to parents.
· 15 October 2025: Statutory consultation pencilled in.
"When a proposal is presented to councillors, discussed with staff, communicated to parents, and scheduled for consultation, it’s more than a suggestion," Cllr Turner continued. "I ask: when does a proposal become a plan? The community was misled and accused of scaremongering for raising concerns the Council created, causing unnecessary stress."
"I demand a full public apology from Cllr Brocklesby for misleading Wyesham residents. The fight for Kymin View continues, but honesty must come first."
He pledged: “Through a Freedom of Information request and media pressure, the truth emerged. I’ll keep fighting for transparency, accountability, and the future of Kymin View School.”
