A THUMPING win against bottom of the table West Pontnewydd consolidated Town's second place in the Gwent County League and put them back on track for a third successive promotion - this time to the Welsh League. Pontnewydd, however, took a shock fifth minute lead when a corner deceived Roberts in the Town goal and was headed in by an even more surprised visiting striker. It took Town until the 25th minute to equalise when Bowen chased another lost cause, dismantled the visiting defence and rolled the ball into an empty net. Just before half time the returning Dominy headed the second and sent the Kingfishers into the half time break in total control of the game. At the restart a five minute period of some of the best attacking play seen for a while at Chippenham saw Town put the result beyond doubt and set them up for their best result of the season as first Kennedy celebrating his call up to the Gwent representative team, then Harris (2) finished clinical moves most of which involved the marauding Bowen. The last half hour was played at a leisurely pace with very little threat shown by the visitors and goals from Bowen and Rogers, vying for the top scorer spot completed the rout. Afterwards Player manager Smith was phlegmatic in his assessment of the victory saying. "It was good to get last week's result behind us and everyone played well today but it was not really a test for us. The real games are going to come thick and fast over the next five or six weeks and then we will really need to stand up and be counted. I'm annoyed that we have to play next week as a lot of our players will be away watching Wales in Ireland and the rules say that there should be no games on international dates. That said I have to make sure that we give it everything. Every game will be a cup final from here in". Next Saturday Town are away at Blaenavon and home in a local derby against Undy Athletic on Wednesday 28th March ko 6.15
