Police in Monmouth are helping members of the public to keep their personal belongings safe whilst out shopping, driving home the message to pickpockets and purse thieves that Monmouth is a no-go area. Officers are issuing lanyards to members of the public, which will act as an added security measure against pickpocketing/purse theft by attaching wallets or purses to the owners handbag. Lanyards are available free of charge from local charity shops or the local police station. Help is also on offer at the station to secure them if needed. The 4000 lanyards have been purchased by Newport based company, Johnsey Estates. Monmouth Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant, Steve Thorpe said: "Having a purse or wallet stolen can be a distressing experience for anyone. The lanyards provide a great way for people to protect themselves and are extremely simple to use. They can be obtained, free of charge, from any charity shop or the police station and we hope they will take a step towards providing increased security to members of the public out shopping and contribute to reducing the fear of crime in our town centres." The Monmouth / Usk neighbourhood policing team can also give a DVD presentation to any local traders/community groups who are interested. Contact 01495 233903 / 233904.
