THE premier horse racing occasion in Wales is to be graced by one of The Principality's sporting legends.

Undefeated professional boxing champion Joe Calzaghe is coming to Chepstow Racecourse for Coral Welsh National day on Saturday 27 December.

The 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be introduced to the crowd in the winner's enclosure where he will be interviewed by raceday presenter Charlie Parkin. He will later present the trophy for the Coral Welsh National.

The world light heavyweight and super middleweight champion said: "I'm a big racing fan, and Coral Welsh National day is a fantastic sporting occasion for the whole of the country.

"I'm thrilled that I will be able to go to Chepstow Racecourse this year and am looking forward to joining the crowds for one of the most exciting days of the year."

To add to the Welsh celebrations, the afternoon's racing will begin with the singing of Land of My Fathers by Welsh soprano Sarah Kempe in the parade ring.

Visitors coming to Chepstow Racecourse, who are advised to set off as early as possible, should know that the first race on Saturday 27 December is at 12.20pm. Joe Calzaghe will be in the parade ring from 11.40am, and the Welsh national anthem will be sung shortly afterwards. Entrance gates are open from 10am.
